Extension Student and Instructors Take Home Top Honors at San Diego Press Club Awards

The 37th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards was held on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Extension Feature Writing alum, Christina Macone-Greene, took home a first place San Diego Press Club win in the Daily Newspapers and Websites category for her feature story  “Movie to Tell Story of Jockey Legend Krone” in the San Diego Union-Tribune. In July, Christina won 2nd place in the Feature Story in Daily Reporting category at the Society of Professional Journalists San Diego-Area Journalism Competition. Congratulations Christina! We couldn’t be more proud of your continued success!

Feature Writing instructor David Coddon also took home high honors for two stories: “Putting a New Spin on the Globe” in San Diego Magazine and a collaborative package on artists of San Diego for San Diego Home Garden Lifestyles. In the winter quarter, David is teaching a brand-new workshop on Editorial and Critical Writing and is helping to shape Extension’s newest endeavor, a feature writing practicum to aid students in gaining valuable experience as freelance writers.

Lastly, Extension instructor Lynne Friedmann won five journalism awards at the SD Press Club annual Journalism Awards Competition for a variety of writing forms:  science news, health news, education feature writing, travel blog, and magazine editing. She is also the 2010 recipient of the Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Relations.  The award is presented by the San Diego Press Club.  Friedmann’s career has been dedicated to the specialized field of science communications.  She has earned an international reputation for informing the public about scientific discoveries as well as educating scientists about public relations principles that support fairness and integrity in working with the media.

Congratulations to David and Lynne! We are extremely proud of the amazing work that you continue to do do as  journalists and instructors!

UC San Diego Extension’s Specialized Certificate in Feature Writing gives students a solid grounding in the craft of feature writing, with instruction in the fundamentals: generating and developing story ideas, cultivating sources, researching, interviewing techniques, and the writing itself. Students learn how to write for the online environment and the business of feature writing, from marketing stories as a freelancer to key legal issues so they can gain the market knowledge to get published.
